Best Golf Courses Ireland

What are the best golf courses in Ireland to play before you leave your boots? Over the years, publications such as Golf Digest, Golf Monthly, Golf World and a number of different publications created and publicised their own versions of what are the top 100 golf courses in various countries.

Most of the publications quote that the Irish Links Courses are the best courses to play in Ireland. With this in mind, the top five courses in Ireland are all links golf courses. Such as Royal County Down Golf Club, Royal Portrush Golf Club, Portmarnock Golf Club, Lahinch Golf Club and Waterville Golf Links.

All of the five golf courses just mentioned are hard courses to play and to post a good score. However, there are also factors that affect player’s scores such as the weather and time of year, the golfer’s ability to play golf, time of day, the playing conditions of the courses and so on.

These factors all have a significant influence on how the golfer defines his or her golf experiences. Additionally, the anecdotal evidence that I have collected over the years, it that, not all golfers love the same courses.

We gathered information from the various golfers that we worked with during 2018. Our approach was to converse on the quality if the gif courses played. We asked, how would they rank the courses played?

Typically, the golfers were only too delighted to offer their feedback and it was are always different. However, Royal County Down Golf Club was the outstanding clear favourite course played.

Mourne Mountains on the 16th Hole at RCD

Royal County Down Golf Club or otherwise known as RCD has been ranked by various authors as the number one golf course to play on the Island of Ireland. Indeed, the setting and location of the golf course are both beautiful and unique. The course borders Dundrum bay along with the backdrop of the Mourne Mountains. The most iconic setting is certainly walking from the ninth tee box over to the fairway. Also, from the back of the 4th tee box and the 15th tee. In fact, the course is full of beautiful vistas from just about every hole. Did you know that in 1939 Cork Golf Club’s Jimmy Bruen set the course record posting a score of 66. Jimmy Bruen was Ireland’s first golfing superstar.

Suggested Hotels in Newcastle:

Slieve Donard Resort is right next door to RCD and CLICK HERE to view the hotel’s website. I like the hotel for a number of reasons. Firstly, the 4-star hotel is walking distances to the first tee at RCD. Secondly, the SPA is great! Also, the food and beverage services are as you would expect at a good four-star hotel. Also, there is the Burrendale 3-star hotel and the Burrendale is located no more than a mile from the front gates of RCD.

Things to Do:

Other Golf Courses to play; Ardglass Golf Club, Malone Golf Club or Royal Belfast Golf Club. Or hill walking along the Mourne Mountain trails. Consider, spending the day in Belfast touring around the city centre, Stormont Castle and the Titanic Experience. Certainly, there is the option to spend the day in the SPA at Slieve Donard Resort.

Marathon Golf Ireland…

Certainly, playing 36 holes a day for four days is tough going on your body! May I ask you, do you think you could manage playing 18 golf courses in 9 days straight? Well, recently I arranged the following Irish Golf Vacation for a father and son! Please, take a look at the following Marathon golf itinerary. What is truly amazing, besides that the guys played a lot of really nice golf courses. Is that, they played golf at the most northern point at Ballyliffin and one of the most southern points to play golf in Ireland at Old Head or Waterville Golf Links.  Consequently, they passed by both the starting and finishing points along the Wild Atlantic Way, located in Donegal and by Kinsale in Cork.

The Golf Courses:

Day 1 Portmarnock Golf Club The Island Golf Club
Day 2 Ardgalss Golf Club Royal County Down Golf Club
Day 3 Portstewart Golf Club Ballyliffin Golf Club
Day 4 Lahinch Golf Club Trump Doonbeg Golf Resort
Day 5 Killarney Golf & Fishing, Killeen Course Dooks Golf Club
Day 6 Waterville Golf Links Tralee Golf Club
Day 7 Cork Golf Club Old Head Golf Links
Day 8 Mount Juliet Golf Resort The K-Club
Day 9 The European Club Druids Glen Golf Resort

The Accommodation

Hotels Standards
Night 1 Co. Down | Slieve Donard Hotel Hotel 4*
Night 2 Portrush | Bushmills Inn Hotel 4*
Night 3 & 4 Doonbeg | Trump Doonbeg (one bedroom suite) Hotel 5*
Night 5 Killarney | The Europe Hotel Hotel 5*
Night 6 Cork | The Radisson Blu Hotel Hotel 4*
Night 7 Kilkenny | Mount Juliet Hotel Hotel 5*
Night 8 Kildare | K-Club Hotel Hotel 5*
Night 9 Dublin | The Gibson Hotel Hotel 4*

Additionally, by using google maps, I am guessing the guys spend approximately, 31 hours driving and covered over 2,002 kilometers behind the wheel.  Notwithstanding all the great Irish Links Golf courses played. A number of highlights are certainly worth mentioning. The beds at Trump Doonbeg topped the hotel comfortability list and the hardest question to answer. What was their favorite course played? Without a doubt, the best course that they played and enjoyed the most was Lahinch Golf Club.

Irish Golf Vacations with Concierge Golf Ireland
Marathon Golf Ireland | Their driven route

Final Dooley Noted

Notably, the guys packed-in as much golf as possible. Unfortunately, there was not enough room to enjoy more cultural activities. Although, they found their choice restaurants by asking Irish people about what was their favorite local restaurants. Also, they managed to kiss the Blarney Stone and saw the Giants Causeway along with viewing the Cliffs of Moher.

Moreover, this Irish golf vacation was simply two golfers playing golf from dawn until dusk. From talking with the guys, certainly, they enjoyed what they experienced and how they discovered Ireland. Marathon Golf is a golf packed that may not be for everyone, however, why not…

Transport types:

Notably, golfers can hire rental cars or enjoy a luxury bus. However, that choice depends on the services the group prefers. Certainly, may I suggest hiring the luxury bus as there is a lot of travelling from place to place. Also, after playing a lot of golf then driving from Royal County Down to Portrush Golf Club, then onto Ballyliffin and Rosapenna. Finally, do prepare for the long trip from Rosapenna to Dublin. That trip is approx. 3hr 30 minutes or more by car/bus. Otherwise, fly AerLingus from Donegal to Dublin Aiport and that is approx. 55 minutes flying time.

Price Ranges:

Accordingly, for this type of trip, we are basing the price on a group of eight golfers. The costs would range from €2,150.00 to €3,790.00 depending on the selected transportation, the hotel standards and room types.
